. >> reporter: relief in the small community of midland city, alabama, following the dramatic rescue of a 5-year-old boy held captive for seven days in an underground bunker. late monday afternoon the words the tightly knit community had been waiting to hear. >> at 3:12 this afternoon, fbi agents safely recovered the child who has been held hostage for nearly a week. >> reporter: police say the boy was being held captive by this 65-year-old after dike boarded a stopped school bus last week, shot and killed driver charles poland and abducted the child. held for nearly a week in an underground bunker beneath dike's property, the fbi said negotiations deteriorated within the last 24 hours and that dike was observed holding a gun. >> at this point, fbi agents fearing the child was in imminent danger entered the bunker and rescued the child. >> reporter: nbc news learned a diversion airy device was used and the hostage rescue team endered through a door at the top of the bunker. >> it was by the grace of god, you know, he's okay. and that was the mission of every man and woman on this compound. >> re

of the mill shootings that ravage cities every day. gun violence is gun violence. hideya pendleton was a high school student. she played volleyball. she performed with her school's marching band at president obama's marching band last month. that was january 21st. on january 29th, she and friends caught cover because of rain. it was only a mile from barack and michelle's home in chicago. a person with a gun approached the group and started shooting. hideya pendleton was not the shooter's target, however. on saturday in chicago, there will be a funeral service for hideya pendleton. the white house let it be known to be that first lady michelle obama will be at the funeral, which will make this even more of a national scale tragedy than it already is. city, the community came together for an early birthday celebration. ethan turns 6 on wednesday. kirk gregory, nbc news. >>> senate democrats on a retreat in maryland will get a visit from the president today to rally support for his second term budget including a request to delay spending cuts that kick in on march 1st. tracie potts has reaction from republicans and the latest nonpartisan budget forecast. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the president says in order to delay the $85 billion in cuts coming at the end of this month, congress needs to pass yet another temporary fix while they continue working on a permanent budget. the focus for republicans is more spending cuts. that is likely where we expect to see a clash at some point. they want to see even deeper cuts than we've already seen. house speaker john boehner says it's the only way to fix our jobs problem in this country. meantime, the nonpartisan congressional budget office is predicting high unemployment continued through 2014 but, this is a big but, a lower deficit, the smallest since president obama's been in o
storm in the boston area. where temperatures are hovering just below freezing. in new york city, it's 32 degrees right now. and even though we will see some light snow in the new york city area at some point this morning, it will change over to rain and most of the accumulating snow in new york itself will occur overnight. you can see blizzard warnings post the from boston right back into hartford, connecticut, and across long island as well. eastern long island is an area we could end up with 12 to 18 inches of snow. boston is the jackpot. and it is certainly not out of the question to pick up 24 to 30 inches of snow. the only saving grace is that it's friday and this is occurring over the weekend. so not as many people on the roads. >> a little bit of good news. we'll check back in with you later. >>> turning to california where a massive manhunt has the los angeles area on virtual lockdown. lapd putting extra security at their headquarters because the suspect used to be one of their own. disfor dornor is wanted in multiple shootings across southern california. the 33-year-old says he'

through southern new england. this wasn't a lot. most of the cities were warm enough that it melted on the pavement and it's gone. that is it. a quick shot. it didn't produce much besides beautiful snowflakes yesterday especially around bethesda, maryland. we get a shot of cold air. there is no big storms between now and the weekend. we are going to see a change in the temperatures. it's been mild lately. it's going to continue that way until about friday. then the cold air plunges down. this is what it looks like on sunday. what's different about this one is it dips to the deep south. usually when we get to the middle of february, late february, sometimes the cold air doesn't make it to the south anymore. who knows? maybe this is the last shot of cold air for new georgia and carolinas. up from the great lakes into new england, you're going to feel significant change. now that storm that's going to be off the coast, i mentioned the last couple days it remains off the coast. still an ocean storm. it may help bring some colder air south. that's about it. don't expect any snow this upc
